Juris Pupcenoks
Associate Professor of Political Science
Bio
Juris Pupcenoks is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Marist. He is the recipient of the Student Government Association鈥檚 School of Liberal Arts Faculty Member of the Year Award (2020), and Faculty Club Advisor of the Year Award (2023). Prof. Juris teaches courses on international relations and international law (including Model United Nations), European politics, foreign policy, and global security politics. He is fluent in Latvian and Russian, knows some French, and is currently learning Mandarin Chinese.
He is also an Associate Fellow at the Academy of International Affairs NRW (Bonn, Germany), and a Senior Research Fellow at Center for Geopolitical Studies Riga (Latvia). He has held various leadership positions with the International Studies Association (ISA), including serving as the Chair of the Programs Committee of the ISA鈥檚 Ethnicity, Nationalism and Migration Studies Section. Previously, he was a Fellow at the Academy of International Affairs NRW, Fellow at Bard College, Visiting Scholar at the University of Latvia, Member of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs New Leaders Initiative and Researcher at the Lorenzo de' Medici Institute (Florence, Italy).
He is the author of 30 publications including monograph Western Muslims and Conflicts Abroad (Routledge 2016), and articles in International Interactions, Nationalities Papers, The International Journal of Press/Politics, and The Conversation. His recent media appearances include Globuss TV Show (Latvia), and Kingston Happenings and Spectrum TV News (New York, USA).

His recent research and publications focus on diplomatic communication and strategic narratives, military intervention, diasporas and minority politics, threat perception and securitization, and Russian-speaking minorities.
