Sergio Pinto Handler is a historian of modern Latin America and a specialist in the history of slavery, capitalism, and popular politics in Brazil. He holds a PhD in History from Stony Brook University and prior to joining the faculty at Marist, Sergio taught in the History Department at St. Olaf College, in the Program in International Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and in the Program in African and African Diaspora Studies at Boston College. His work on the history of radical antislavery in late nineteenth century Rio de Janeiro recently appeared in the anthology Freedoms Gained and Freedoms Lost (Fordham University Press, 2021) and he is currently in the latter stages of writing a book-length intellectual and political history about the radical abolitionists of Brazil鈥檚 capital city. His research interests are wide ranging and include urban history, peasant studies, environmental history, the history of anthropology and of international development and the history of food.
