New Student Orientation
Required Student Preference Surveys
New students are asked to complete surveys to help us know more about your interests and preferences. The survey results will be used when fall schedules are created and for advising purposes in future semesters. The surveys will be used to gauge student interest in specific programs on campus so that departments can plan according.

Preference Survey FAQs
Below you will find a series of frequently asked questions pertaining to the surveys required for all new students. Click on the questions below to view their answers.
What is the purpose of the World Language Survey?
Results are used to create a complete profile for each student, for advising purposes during all four years and to optimize the first semester schedules. It will let us know what language(s) you currently speak fluently, which language you have studied, and which one you may wish to study in the future.
How can my language skills affect my academic options?
A language background can affect a number of academic choices throughout an undergraduate career: fulfillment of Core courses, study abroad, interdisciplinary minors and language requirements in some academic areas, scholarship, and long-term graduate plans. This is why a comprehensive academic profile is necessary whether or not you plan to pursue your language study in your first year.
Can the survey and placement give me credit or make me "place out" of language?
The survey is NOT used to give credit or determine whether one "places out" of language but to gather as much information as possible about a student's current abilities in one or more language, and possible interest in learning a different language.
How will the information in the sports interest section of the surveys be used?
This information is used to determine the extent to which the athletic interests of incoming students are being met by the current intramural, club, recreation, and intercollegiate athletics offerings on campus. Therefore, it is completed by all students prior to their arrival on campus.
I am not interested in participating in any athletic activities on campus, do I still need to complete the sports interest section of the surveys?
Your answers are important to us and there are no right or wrong answers. All students must complete this section.
I heard 蜜月直播 is putting in a new track. What is getting done with that project?
蜜月直播 is building a facility at the North End of campus which will house a turf field and a track. The entire facility will be lighted. The inclusion of a new facility will allow Marist鈥檚 Varsity teams to have more selective practice times, Marist鈥檚 Club Sports to have better practices and for Marist鈥檚 Intramural Sports to accommodate more teams and more activities.
Who should I contact if I want to participate in a sport?
Once the survey has closed, the Athletics department will be sent all the results of the survey. The Club Sport office will pass along information to each of the club sports. The Athletic Director will be provided with any interest pertaining to Varsity teams to disseminate to each coach.
Who should I contact if I have any questions?
You can contact recreation@marist.edu with any Club Sports or Intramural Sports questions. You can contact athletics@marist.edu with any Varsity Athletics Questions, or contact the coach of that sport directly.
If I want to participate in a sport, do I need to do anything before I come to Marist?
If you want to participate in any Varsity Athletic sport, you should contact athletics@marist.edu or the coach of the sport immediately. You do not need to do anything in advance to participate in a Club Sport or Intramural, but if you would like to get in touch with a Club Sport president before coming to campus, you can contact recreation@marist.edu and they can help put you in contact with the president of the club.
How is the information from the Music section of the survey used?
The Music information is used to determine the extent to which the musical interests of incoming students are being met by the current academic and extracurricular music offerings on campus. Information gleaned from this questionnaire will be used to help the Music program events based on the number of potentially interested musicians. Additionally, it is used to assist in the enrollment of students into music courses for their Fall semester schedule. Music courses are not mandated in the core curriculum, but a number of courses may be used toward the completion of Core Pathways. Therefore, we encourage all students to complete this questionnaire by the deadline.
You can check out a sampling of Music performances .
I heard something about a music camp. How do I get more information?
Music camp is a time where Marist musicians arrive a few days prior to the start of the Fall semester to begin learning music for our first performances. For Band, you will learn the field show for football games, while Singers and Orchestra will learn music for their first performance 鈥 usually the last weekend in September. Admitted students who complete the First Year Orientation Music Interest Survey will receive camp information around the July 4th holiday. Those who do not complete the survey will need to contact MusicDept@marist.edu to receive the form.
I am not interested in taking a music course my first semester but still want to perform with the department. How do I become involved?
Please contact Mike Napolitano in the Music Department at Michael.Napolitano@Marist.edu or (845) 575-3242 to get your name on the interest list for our performing ensembles and music camps.
